Installing Windows Software Update Services on Windows Server 2012

 
On Windows Server 2012, Windows Server Update Services is installed as a Role, If you are not using Windows Server 2012, reference Appendix C – Guidance for Windows Server 2008 R2 OS.
 
  1. From Server Manager, click on the Manage menu, then select Add Roles and Features.
  2. Select the Role Based or feature-based installation option, then click Next.
  3. Ensure the localhost is selected, and click Next
  4. In the Roles list, scroll to the bottom and select, Windows Server Update Services
  5. Click on Features in the left pane. Scroll down to Remote Server Administration Tools and expand it. Then expand Role Administration Tools. Scroll down and select Windows Server Update Services Tools. Click Next
  6. You will be prompted to select Role Services for WSUS. The WID Database and WSUS Services options should be selected 
  7. On the Content location slection screen, click the Store updates in the following location, check box to enable it. Then enter E:\WSUS\ (or an alternate path. Ensure this location is not your system drive, and contains enough storage for all downloaded updates). Click Next, then Install.
